Cartoon analysis

The Cartoon was made by John Atkison and got published at the 28th January on the website wronghands1.wordpress.com.

The headline of the comic says: “before Facebook”, three people are shown with think bubbles over their heads. Everyone has individual background, hair colors; and takes the same amount of place in the picture. To sum up they think about the content people consume or post nowadays, for example the guy on the right guy thinks: I wish I could tell everyone about this sandwich, which is a reference for users posting their food. With that, it gets clear that the thoughts are meant ironically, because people don't cared about those things before Facebook existed.

The carton does criticize the pointless content which people post on Facebook. With his choice of words, the creator compares two timelines, the one before Facebook and the one when Facebook was established. It could also be seen as an ironic explanation, for so long people wanted to know or share unimportant Thoughts and Questions like the three, which finally got possible with social media. Through the comparison, it gets clear that we have access to information about people we don’t or only hardly know which was not possible in the same way earlier days.

I only use Facebook every once in a while, but I do agree with that, there are tons of postings or discussions which are not necessary. As the comic is pretty straight forward and more text than picture orientated, it is easy to understand.

Analyse der Karikatur

Der Cartoon wurde von John Atkison gezeichnet, und erschien am 28. Januar auf der Webseite: wronghands1.wordpress.com.

Die originale Überschrift lautet: „Before Facebook“, auf Deutsch „Vor Facebook“. Es sind drei Menschen zu sehen, die mit Denkblasen über ihren Köpfen, abgebildet sind. Jeder hat eine individuelle Hintergrund- und Haarfarbe, und nimmt gleich viel Platz ein. Inhaltlich zusammengefasst denken sie daran, dass sie, den Content, der heutzutage gepostet wird, mitteilen möchten. Zum Beispiel denkt der Mann, auf der rechten Seite: „I wish I could tell everyone about this sandwich“ auf Deutsch: Ich wünschte ich könnte allen von diesem Sandwich berichten. Das ist eine Referenz, zu den Nutzern, die ihr Essen online stelle. Damit wird ersichtlich, dass die Gedanken ironisch gemeint sind, denn die Leute interessiert so etwas nicht, bevor Facebook existierte.

Der Cartoon kritisiert die sinnlosen Beiträge, die gepostet werden. Mit seiner Wortwahl, vergleicht er zwei Zeitabschnitte, den Zeitpunkt als Facebook noch nicht existierte, und den nach dem Facebook etabliert war. Es könnte auch so gesehen werde, dass der Cartoon eine ironische Erklärung liefert. So lange wollten Leute unwichtige Gedanken oder Fragen teilen, was nun endlich dank den sozialen Medien möglich ist. Durch den Vergleich wird klar, dass wir Zugang zu Informationen haben, von Leuten, die wir gar nicht oder nur kaum kennen, dies war in derselben Form früher nicht möglich.

Ich selbst nutze Facebook nur ab und zu, aber ich stimme mit der Botschaft des Cartoons überein. Es gibt haufenweise Beiträge und Diskussionen, die unnötig sind. Der Comic ist leicht zu verstehen, da er textorientiert und in seiner Bild und Textsprache direkt ist.
