John Steinbeck, The Pearl The book The Pearl from John Steinbeck deals with an indian fisherman- named Kino, his wife Juana and their baby- son Coyotito. The family lives in a little brush house at the coast of the Gulf. While the sun is rising and a new day begins to start Kino and his wife are still lying on their mats next to their son Coyotito who sleeps in a hanging box. Kino is a very poor man but remains happy because of his family. After he stood up he listens to the sounds outside for a while and watches the rising sun. Next, Kino hears the Song of the Family in his mind and this shows the reader that everything is well. This song or the Song of Evil start to play in the mind of Indian people when something good or evil happens. Suddenly a bad accident happens to Coyotito. A poisonous scorpion stings him. While Coyotito is screaming the whole neighbourhood comes to them to see what happened. Juana tells Kino to fetch the doctor but that undertaking debunked to be impossible because of the class distinction between Indians and Spanish. Kino has no money to pay the doctor for his medical attendance. But Juana brings Coyotito, not consindering the money, to the doctor and the whole neighbourhood join their lane. But as supposed, the doctor denies to examine Coyotito, because the family owns no money. Hence Kino punches the door furiously. After that Juana makes a poultice of seaweed and put it on Coyotito s shoulder. Then they push the canoe into the water and paddle ...
