Lord of the Rings - book presentation

The book „The Lord of the Rings“, you would better say the 6 books of “The Lord of the Rings” are some of the best books ever written. The 6 books are divided into 3 parts: The first and the second book are called “The fellowship of the ring”, the next 2 books are called “The two towers” and the last ones are called “The return of the king”.
The first part “The fellowship of the ring” is talking about that Gandalf the Grey realized that Frodo’s ring really is the one ring of power.
“Three were given to the Elves: immortal, wisest and fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf-lords: great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls. And nine. Nine rings were gifted to the race of men, who above all else desire power. For within these rings was bound the strength and will to govern each race. But they were all of them deceived. For another ring was made... The dark lord Sauron forged another ring, the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could control all others.”
"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."
Frodo and his companions had to escape out of the shire, with the help of Aragorn, a ranger and descendent of the kings of Minas Tirith, but pursued by the black riders, the Nazgul. As they arrived at Rivendell they were safe. But they had no time to rest. Elrond, the lord of Rivendell, called deputies of the races of men, elves and dwarfs to discuss about how to destroy the one ring. Frodo was destined to be the ring-holder. The four hobbits Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam, the wizard Gandalf, Aragorn and Boromir for the men, Legolas for the elves and Gimli for the dwarfs, build the fellowship of the ring. They started their journey very secretly and as they reached the pass of Caradhras they tried to pass, but they failed. So Gandalf led them down through the mountain. This mines are called Moria – great halls of the dwarfs. At the bridge of Khazad dûm, Gandalf fought against a great evil demon, called Balrog, but both felt down into a dark abyss. Aragon led them out of Moria through the forest of Lórien, down the river of Anduin until they reached the Rauros-falls. They noticed that they were observed by scouts of the dark lord and followed by Gollum, a creature which once had the ring of power. Now they had to decide if they should go east, to Mordor, or west, to Minas Tirith. As Frodo wanted to go west, into the land of the enemies, Boromir tried to steal the ring - but he failed and died. The hordes of Sauron and Saruman divided the fellowship into 3 groups. Frodo and Sam, trying to destroy the ring of power, Merry and Pippin, caught by the Uruk-hai of Isengart and Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli trying to rescue them.

As Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli tried to rescue the two hobbits, they met the Rohirrim, the riders of the mark led by Éomer. They said they killed everyone of the Uruk-hai. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli thought their friends were dead. But Aragorn used his ranger-abilities to find out what really happened. The hobbits escaped into the forest of Fangorn. Merry and Pippin met the leader of the Ents, called Treebeard. Aragorn and his partners went into this forest and they met Gandalf – but from now known as Gandalf the white. With him they rode to Edoras, into the hall of Théoden, king of Rohan. Gandalf healed him poisoned by Wormtongue, the slave of Saruman. A huge battle would quickly begin and Théoden called everyone to Helms Deep, the big fortress of Rohan. As every hope seemed to be destroyed, Gandalf arrived with the Rohirrim and they won this battle. Gandalf led his friends to Isengart, seeing Treebeard and the other ents, led by Merry and Pippin who destroyed Isengart. Saruman was caught together with Wormtongue in the huge tower called Orthanc.

Gandalf destroyed the power of Saruman (who was also a wizard). Wormtongue threw a stone down of the tower trying to hurt Gandalf but he even didn’t recognize this. Pippin saw it and he gave this stone to Gandalf. Later Pippin was too weak and he took a look into this stone. It was a Palantir. Sauron thought Pippin has got the ring of power and so Gandalf took Pippin and rode to Minas Tirith to prepare Gondor for the War. Frodo and Sam came Mount Doom nearer and nearer every day. Gollum caught them up and Frodo succeeded taming him. Gollum led them through the Deadmarshes to the Black Gate of Mordor. As they saw the gate they knew that it was impossible to pass it. So Gollum told them that there is another way into Mordor, a more secret one. Trying to reach this place they were caught by rangers, led by Faramir, the brother of Boromir. Faramir knew their plan but he let them pass and he warned Frodo and Sam. The way Gollum wanted to go seemed to be Cirith Ungol, a very dangerous place. As they reached Minas Morgul, the fortress of the Witch-King of Angmar, they saw the big army of Minas Morgul marching out led by the Witchking himself, called Er-Mûrazor: And so the war began. Gollum led them into the Caves of Cirith Ungol and he felt back into his evil personality. He tried to fed the hobbits to Shelob, the big spider and lord of the pass of Cirith Ungol, to get the ring of power. But he failed. Frodo stung by the spider, seemed to be dead so Sam took the ring and wanted to destroy it on his own. But then some Orc-scouts arrived and they said that Frodo wasn’t dead. They took Frodo and Sam followed them. He saved Frodo and they started their last step of their journey: reaching mount doom to destroy the one ring of power.

Minas Thirith was getting attacked of the hordes of Mordor and Gandalf took the leadership of the brave guardians of Gondor. It was a battle they couldn’t win. The Witch-King of Angmar attacked Gandalf the White. And again, as every hope seemed to be history, the riders of Rohan appeared. The Witch-King had to form his warriors to stand against the Rohirrim. But the riders of Rohan ruled a big amount of enemies, until the Haradrim, the men of the south arrived. They had big elephants called Mumakil, trampling everyone in their way. Very soon the Witch-King killed Théoden. It is said that no man alive can kill the Witch-King. Éowyn, the brave sister-daughter (niece) of Théoden fought against the Witch-King and finally she killed him. This war offered no prospects… suddenly at the harbor of Minas Tirith, called Harlond, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli arrived together with the army of dead. They had pass through the Paths of the Dead to revive an army more powerful than the army of Mordor. With this army they saved Minas Thirith. But this war wasn’t over yet. Behind the Black Gate there are 10.000 Orcs between Mount Doom and Frodo. So Aragorn led the Men of the west to their last battle. At the Black Gate of Mordor Aragorn told Sauron he should come out and talk with him. So Sauron sent his slave, called the Mouth of Sauron. He had no eyes, this was because of Sauron is only a big lidless eye on top of the tower Bârad-dur. Sauron was too weak without his ring of power to appear in a human shape. Aragorn cut of the head of Saurons Mouth and the Black Gate opened. Sauron was blinded by Aragorn, the king of Gondor, Elessar, descended of Isildur, who had once cut of the ring of the hand of Sauron with his sword called Narsil. Aragorn had this sword, but now called Anduril, flame of the west. Sauron feared this Sword and Aragorn knew this.

Aragorn now did a very encouraging speech: “Hold your ground, hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of woes and shattered shields, when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good Earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!”

So Sauron sent his whole army out of the Black Gate, even the Nazgul. So the valley between Frodo and Sam and Mount Doom was empty. The men of the west had just to fight against the evil army until Frodo destroyed the ring of power by throwing it into the abyss of Mount Doom. As they reached the Mountain, Gollum suddenly appeared and made this last steps very difficult for the two hobbits. As Frodo was in front of the abyss of Mount Doom, he took out the ring of power and Sam said he should throw it into the abyss. But the ring was too strong, here where he was once forged. Frodo put on the ring and Sam didn’t believe his own eyes. But no one thought about Gollum. So Gollum jumped on Frodo and he bit his finger off. Gollum was just too fanatic so that he fell down into the abyss and the ring was destroyed. Barad-dur, together with Sauron fell into shadow and the war of the ring was over. But Mount Doom was going to explode and Frodo and Sam were alone. As Gandalf appears together with the Eagles and their leader Gwaiihir they were caught up and rescued. Back at Minas Tirith Aragorn was crowned and the Fellowship went home. Their ways divided and finally the hobbits arrived at the shire, their home! But they didn’t recognize their home. It was now under control of a guy called Sharker. After much fighting they reached the headquarter of this guy and now they knew who was this Sharker. It was Saruman. Despite every evil thing that Saruman did they let him pass. But Wormtongue, his slave killed him and he was also killed by some hobbit archers. After a few years, the hobbits rebuild the shire. Now Frodo had to go away to the Grey Havens. This was a special honor for Frodo, the ring-bearer.

My opinion of the book:
I think this is the best fantasy book and the best legend ever created. J.R.R. Tolkien is writing with such a love for detail and it’s binding to read this story. The Lord of the Rings movie version is quite different than the version of the books. Peter Jackson couldn’t put everything into his movies because it’s too much stuff. For example he didn’t put in Tom Bombadil or the recapturing of the shire in the end. Finally I want to tell you my favorite quotation of the Book.

“All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you”
