Beschreibung / Inhalt

Life in India The Western World still imagines India as a typical 3rd World country: Poor farmers starving in their fields, beggars in slums and terrible diseases. However, while India still faces many problems, this view of the country is no longer true these days. India has a population of more than one billion inhabitants. Most people no longer live in villages: By the turn of the millennium 305 million Indians lived in nearly 3700 towns and cities spread across the length and breadth of the country. This shall comprise 30 of its population, in sharp contrast to only 60 millions (15 ) who lived in urban areas in 1947 when the country became independent. During the last fifty years the population of India has grown two and half times, but Urban India has grown by nearly five times. After China Indias urban population is second largest in the world. About one-third of Urban India (71 million) lives in metropolitan cities. Million-plus cities of India Rank City Population (in million) . 1951 1971 1991 1. Bombay (Mumbai) 2.97 5.97 12.57 2.
